Celebrating Failure

Celebrating Failure

1. This semester I had to take business finance, one of the hardest classes in the business school, and it was not an easy time. Although I didn't exactly "fail", the first test I didn't do as well as I hoped. It was hard on me because I had spent so much time and energy studying for this class and to receive a grade so low really bummed me out, even though it was considered a great grade for the first test.

2. What I learned from that is not letting that grade define me. I knew going into that class it was going to be very challenging and I learned how to properly study and allocate my time on certain topics, which is exactly what I did for the following two exams.

Reflection
After going through all the troubles and times of studying for my class, I learned that I am strong and smart enough to pick myself up and study harder. The results for this showed in my next two exams where each I studied even harder and the test grades show for it. Its ok to not be perfect and have the best grades in every single exam, but what matters most is learning from the first mistake and implementing anything you can to make your studying more efficient and get there results you want.

  1. Hi Sydney, I appreciate your post and thank you for sharing the details of how your wrestled with this class this semester. I think it's wise for you to take away how the grade should not define you. It is very easy in this college culture at UF to believe that what you study is who you are, or what you score if how much you are worth. It sounds like the sorrow you experienced has somewhat served as a lesson for changing your perspective going into next semester. I would ask, was it not that you put your trust in your effort that you were bummed when this effort wasn't good enough? Wouldn't just trying harder and picking yourself up just set the risk higher for what future failure might feel like? I've found putting my trust in something other than my academic effort has been helpful overall. Thanks again.

  2. Hi Sydney, I have had a few friends take business finance and I have seen it push them all to their wits end. I have never taken the course so I can't say I understand, but I can imagine how stressful this semester must've been for you, especially now with everything going on. I think its really important to give yourself credit for what you did, because many people would not be up for the challenge. As you said, grades don't need to define you. Your work ethic speaks for itself!
